Problem

The following error occurs when using an ODBC connection to connect to Microsoft Access, which in turn is linked to a Microsoft SQL Server database using an ODBC connection. [Error Message -] DMS-E-GENERAL, A general exception has occurred during operation 'asynchronous open'. [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] ODBC--connection to failed.'

Resolving The Problem

When you create the ODBC connection to SQL server, select the option of With SQL Server authentication using a login ID and password entered by the user.

Also, confirm that in Microsoft Access, the Machine Data Source and System Data Source has been used to create the ODBC connection.

Steps -

1. In the Access Database, from the File menu, click Get external data and then Linktables.

2. From the File Types list, select ODBC database.

4. Click New.

5. Select System Data Source and select Next.

5. Select SQL Server and click Next and then Finish.

6. Type the name for the ODBC connection and the name of the SQL server in the appropriate text boxes.

7. Click Next and then select the With SQL server authentication using a login id and password entered by the user checkbox.

10. Click OK several times until you get back to SQL Server login.
